Canine Influenza

Canine influenza is a newly emerging infectious disease caused by a "flu" virus. Just like the human "flu", canine influenza is highly contagious. While 100% of dogs are susceptible to influenza infection, about 80% of infected dogs will show signs of infection. It is important to know that dogs that do not show signs of the disease can still spread the virus to other dogs.

The most common sign of canine influenza is a persistent cough, which can last up to four weeks. It can also be accompanied by a low-grade fever, nasal discharge, lack of energy and a loss of appetite.

It is highly recommended that all canine patients of Perkiomen Animal Hospital be vaccinated against canine influenza. Effective immediately, the canine influenza vaccine will be required for all boarding pets. Initially, the vaccine is a series of two given 2 - 4 weeks apart followed by an annual booster. The cost is $17 per vaccine. Up until December 1, 2009, as a help to our boarding clients, hospital personnel will administer the vaccine with no examination fee. After December 1, 2009, an examination fee will be charged along with the vaccine fee.
